Penedo Furado dates back to the Jurassic period, when the sea bathed this inland area, close to Nadadouro. It is now a huge rock, light brown in colour and on the side facing the Óbidos Lagoon, signs of erosion are visible, with deep cavities and one of them ended up going through the rock, forming a passage.

The main gateway to the town of Óbidos was probably built during the reign of King Ferdinand (around 1376). It housed the oratory dedicated to the Patron Saint of Óbidos, Our Lady of Mercy, built in the 17th century and now housed in the Óbidos Municipal Museum. The façade is covered in Baroque tiles from 1740-45. It is surmounted by the inscription “The Virgin Our Lady was conceived without original sin” – commissioned by King John IV in gratitude for the protection of the Patron Saint during the Restoration of Independence in 1640.

Its walled construction dates back to the period of King Ferdinand (14th century), and features characteristics of medieval military architecture, with a double door and the particularity of being “elbowed”, allowing for the defence of the medieval town more effectively.
