Church of St. Margaret, Virgin and Martyr in Janisławice

Highlight • Religious Site

The first parish church in Janisławice built of wood after the village was founded in 1330 fell into disrepair and after more than 150 years of its existence, a new one had to be built, which happened around 1500, when Mateusz from Wolbrom was the parish priest. According to the Annals of the Warsaw Archdiocese from 1958, its founder was probably the Metropolitan Archbishop of Gniezno, Andrzej Róża Boryszewski, the Primate of Poland, while M. Stefanowski believes that the probable founder was the Metropolitan Archbishop of Gniezno, Fryderyk Cardinal Jagiellończyk, the Primate of Poland (M. Stefanowski, On the margin of the catalogue of the Warsaw Archdiocese from 1935, "Studia Theologica Varsaviensia" 1992, year 40, no. 1, p. 219). There is also no consensus on the date of the church's consecration, as the years 1521 and 1525 are listed. It is certain that its patron saint was St. Margaret, virgin and martyr. In the 17th century, the church was expanded, as the Archdeacon of Łowicz, Fr. Józef Marcinkowski, who visited the parish in 1761, confirmed the existence of a brick sacristy added to it. At that time, the church had five altars. A renovated hospital-shelter operated next to the church, inhabited by four poor people. In the following centuries, the building was renovated several times (in 1794, 1809 and 1856). In 1914, the church was expanded again: a western porch was added at the front. In the last century, the church, which is over 400 years old, underwent renovation works again (in 1922, 1949 and 1981 – new interior design).

The Church of St. Joseph was built in the years 1907-1914 - according to the design of the Warsaw architect Mr. Konstanty Wojciechowski - to meet the growing pastoral needs of the Jeżów parish. The idea of erecting a new church was taken up by the parish priest, Canon Bolesław Raźmo.

The construction began on September 28, 1907 and was completed in mid-1914. And so a building was built in the neo-Gothic style, three-nave, with the chancel facing north, with a high front tower and a bell tower.

According to the design, the church tower was to be even higher, but during a storm the wind knocked down the wooden structure, so the work was completed at a lower level. The main building material of the impressive building is red brick, and its foundation was prepared from processed field stone. The whole was consecrated in July 1914 by the delegate of the Archbishop of Warsaw - Father Władysław Żaboklicki, Parish Priest and Dean of Skierniewice.
