Santillana del Mar

Highlight • Settlement

Santillana is not by the sea, although its municipal area includes two beaches. This medieval town, magnificently preserved, grew around the Romanesque collegiate church of Santa Juliana, from the 12th century, which was built from the monastery of Santa Juliana whose presence was already recorded in the 9th century.

Its cobbled streets and impressive stately homes bear witness to its economic prosperity, as do the civil constructions of the Merino and Don Borja towers. Its agricultural present invites you to taste dairy-based desserts such as quesadillas, sobaos pasiegos, or leche con bizcochos. Santillana is an essential stop in Cantabria.

San Pedro Church of Oreña

Highlight • Religious Site

It is next to the Camino de Santiago, and has spectacular views of the Picos de Europa. You can enter and ascend some stairs to the top to take some very special photos. According to the historical records of Oreña, before 1111 there was a chapel in the place where the Church now rests. Of this, at present, only one of the gates remains, which is called by the residents gate No. 1. It is worth visiting.
