Pond and rest area Matavun

Highlight • Cave

Matavun is a small village in the municipality of Divača, near the entrance to the Škocjan Caves in the Primorje Region. Part of the Škocjan Educational Trail runs through the village.

In the middle of the village there is a kal, a shallow pond with an impermeable bottom, where rainwater is collected. Not far away there used to be an ice house, an underground storage room for ice. On the other side stands a large Lipa tree, which people have revered since ancient times. Slovenians have a linden leaf as their symbol. Across the road is a monument to fallen soldiers of the National Liberation War.

Josip Jože Cerkvenik lived in the village of Matavun and was one of the Škocjan cavers who, with candles, oil lamps or carbide lamps, explored, built and guided visitors through the cave, poorly lit. He is credited with the reputation of the Škocjan Caves and their exceptional cultural heritage, which is intertwined with the natural wonders of the area.

Škocjan Caves Entrance

Highlight • Cave

Location in the regional park Škocjanske jame. Huge caves, great stalactites, cool waterfalls and canyons / gorges. Everything embedded in a breathtaking landscape. The tour through the caves is very good and interesting. Not cheap, but worth the money. You should plan at least two hours. Sturdy shoes as well as the cave a bit warm (12 degrees Celsius) recommended.
