CLAY Ceramic Museum Denmark

Highlight • Monument

CLAY MUSEUM OF CERAMIC ART DENMARK (formerly Grimmerhus Ceramic Museum)
is a museum of ceramic art, crafts, and design.
The museum boasts one of the finest collections of ceramics in Europe.

In 2010, the museum was donated a unique collection of more than 55,000 ceramic works – porcelain, earthenware, and faience – from Royal Copenhagen,
Bing & Grøndahl, and Alumnia. This special collection, which showcases more than

235 years of ceramic design development from the three renowned ceramic manufacturers Royal Copenhagen Porcelain, Bing & Grøndahl, and Alumnia, has never been presented to a public before.

Interest in ceramics has grown significantly among young and old around the world in recent years. From China to the USA, the "three blue waves" are the epitome of Danish arts and crafts and design.

The museum's doors opened in the summer of 2015 following an extensive renovation and expansion. Among other things, the Royal Porcelain Collection – a major attraction – will be presented here for Danish and foreign visitors.

The museum will once again be a hub for international, changing exhibitions
and thematic events, featuring works by contemporary, internationally acclaimed Danish and foreign ceramic artists. There will also be the opportunity to spend some time in the museum café and visit the museum shop with its tasteful selection of ceramic arts and crafts and design.

Furthermore, the architecture, with its accompanying sculpture park
and the magnificent view of the Little Belt, is a gem. The major expansion
of the museum was carried out primarily underground, with respect for the original Grimmerhus building –
a unique architectural gem dating back to 1857 and still fully
protected today.

It is no coincidence that Grimmerhus Ceramic Museum is now called the CLAY MUSEUM OF CERAMICS ART DENMARK. This has historical reasons.

``` In the 1980s, a group of art enthusiasts were members of the international artists' group Clay Today. They needed a suitable location for a ceramics museum.
And they chose Grimmerhus (a widow's retirement home dating back to 1857).
Recognizing the museum's history and its professional identity, the museum was renamed the CLAY MUSEUM OF CERAMICS ART DENMARK.
St. Nikolai Church Middelfart
Highlight • Religious Site
St. Nicholas Church in Middelfart was built in 1200.
It underwent the same development as most other old churches:
Originally in the Romanesque style with round arches, it later evolved into the Gothic style with pointed arches. Initially, the church had a nave and a choir.
The tower was added around 1300, followed somewhat later (around 1400) by the chapel, then the aisle, then the vault, and finally, in 1667, the church's porch.
Sankt Nicolai Church
Highlight • Religious Site
The church consists of a Romanesque choir from the second half of the 13th century, a sacristy, a tower, and a choir arm (now a mortuary chapel) dating from around 1480-1520, and a somewhat younger basilica nave dating from around 1524.
Like many other coastal churches, the church is dedicated to the sailor, Saint Nicholas.
Old Harbor of Middelfart
Highlight • Settlement
Middelfart is a seaside town whose history is closely linked to the waters of the Little Belt, ferry traffic and the many harbor porpoises that live in the waters. Middelfart was home to many smaller merchant ships and ferries before the Little Belt bridges connected Funen and Jutland. Today there are 10 traditional ships worth preserving in the harbour.
New Little Belt Bridge
Highlight • Bridge
From here, you have the best views of the New Little Belt Bridge.
The New Little Belt Bridge was built between 1965 and 1970
and inaugurated on October 21, 1970.
In 1970, the New Little Belt Bridge, with its three lanes in each direction, took over a large portion of the traffic from the Old Little Belt Bridge.
The New Little Belt Bridge is thus the main connection between Jutland and Funen
and it is even free to use.
