Exe Estuary Trail

Highlight • Trail

Lovely bit of traffic-free path between Topsham and Exton on the way to Exmouth seafront.

Well surfaced and ideal for any type of bike as well as walkers and runners. Be mindful of other users, especially when it's busier at the weekends and holidays.

Exe Marsh Flats

Highlight • Trail

The marshy flats at this section of the Ex are natural sanctuary for birds and there are duckboards and bird watching spots along the route.

Topsham Dock

Highlight • Settlement

Once upon a time, Topsham was one of the busiest ports in England although it's hard to imagine now. The dock is situated in a particularly useful position, even though the river was initially navigable for boats all the way to Exeter. The maritime history of the town is genuinely incredible and you can learn all about it at the Topsham Museum.

Today, the dock offers lovely views over the moored boats on the Exe. There's an antique shop full of interesting items and a pub with lots of outside seating.

St Margaret's Church

Highlight • Religious Site

This lovely church stands on the site of an older iteration, dating back 1,000 years. After a fire in the 1600s, much of the church eventually had to be pulled down and rebuilt. As the rebuild covered some existing graves, the headstones were used as paving slabs inside.

Exe Estuary Trail boardwalk

Highlight • Cycleway

The Exe Estuary Trail is a 22.5-mile (36-km), mainly flat cycle route and walkway that runs around the entire Exe Estuary linking Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish, with fantastic views along the River Exe. The trail is part of the National Cycle Network Route 2 and is predominantly off-road. It passes through some beautiful riverside towns and villages steeped in maritime history, such as Topsham and Lympstone. The trail also offers a great opportunity to see the diverse and plentiful wildlife that inhabits the estuary, such as birds, fish and seals.
