William Louis de Normanville Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The gardens are also next to the River Leam which can be seen closer on the very striking blue Mill Bridge, a suspension footbridge that was erected in 1903 to connect Jephson Gardens with the nearby Mill Gardens by the engineer William Louis de Normanville. This is the memorial to de Normanville in the gardens.

Barbed Poppies Memorial, Jephson Gardens

Highlight • Natural Monument

On 11th November 2014 a memorial was unveiled  in the Jephson Gardens, between the Aviary and Willes Road entrance.  The memorial will remember all those who played any part in World War One, including the widows and orphans and those who served at home.

The Leamington History Group applied for the grant for the memorial and worked with Warwick District Council and Leamington Town Council to commission the sculpture.

The memorial was designed by Tim Tolkien and the central feature consists of two poppies in flower and one stem with a seed-head at the top.

All the poppies are entwined with barbed wire and this extends to wrap around some adjoining fencing. The tablet in front states simply “The Poppies; Lest We Forget”. The plaque naming the sculptor calls it “Barbed Poppies”.

It is a subtle design which is not quite as immediate in effect as the sea of poppies surrounding the Tower of London in November 2014 but many people we have spoken to agreed that it evoked a strong emotional response.

Depending on when you pass this little cafe, it is a great place to stop and enjoy a drink, cake or icecream. This used to be Jephson Park's Avery many years ago and before being converted into a little cafe.

The Aviary café opened in the summer of 2014 and is situated in the magnificent Jephson Gardens, just a stone’s throw away from the town centre. In this elegant glass and iron building, once used as a Victorian bird house, we produce a counter of tasty items, both sweet and savoury, ideal for a light lunch or with one of our delicious coffees or teas.

In addition they serve a selection of delicious Roskilly’s ice creams, plus child-friendly, and healthy, snacks nibbles and drinks. There is usually a range of gluten free and vegan items.

Davis Clock Tower

Highlight • Monument

The clock tower was given to the town in 1925 by the widow of William Davis, J.P. who had thrice been mayor of the town. The chimes fairly quickly fell out of use due to complaints from nearby residents.

The clock was overhauled by Smiths of Derby in 1986, at which time the bells were brought back into action but with a night silencing mechanism.
The bells are hung in two tiers, 2, 3 & 4 on top, at the level of the sound openings. The notes, in descending order, are G#, F#, E, B and A

Details of the Bells

1 John Taylor & Co, Loughborough  1925  1-2-15
2 John Taylor & Co, Loughborough  1925  2-0-14
3 John Taylor & Co, Loughborough  1925  2-2-16
4 John Taylor & Co, Loughborough  1925  5-2-13

Royal Leamington Spa Bowling Club

Highlight • Rest Area

Royal Leamington Spa Bowling Club (RLSBC) has had a club house on the Archery Road site since 1913. The existing clubhouse was rebuilt in 1995 in readiness for Leamington Spa hosting the Women's World Bowls Championships in 1996.

The centre portion, as shown in the above Club photo, was modelled on the previous clubhouse and now contains the bar area and kitchen. The addition of a dining hall to the left and men's and ladies' changing rooms to the right completes the current facilities.

Originally, there was a single bowling green on the current site. A second green was added 10 years later, then a third, and finally, with the arrival of the EWBA National Championships, a fourth bowling green. In 1995, a fifth bowling green was added in readiness for the Women's World Bowls tournament.

Victoria Park is still the home of the Bowls England Ladies National Championships and since 2014 has also become the home of Bowls England Men's National Championships. It is now known as the home of English Bowls and has hosted a number of England and other International matches as well as Bowls England Trials.

RLSBC regularly hosts Warwickshire County matches and competitions and a number of other organisations, such as VIBE (Visually Impaired Bowls England) and the Civil Service, also hold their competitions at the Club.

RLSBC runs a wide selection of club competitions and a full season of friendly fixtures against other local clubs, the men generally playing on Saturday afternoons and the ladies generally mid-week. The Club enters three men's teams in a local mid-week afternoon league with the ladies also entering three teams in a mid-week evening league. Tuesday evening is Club Night which takes the form of a mixed triples league, before everyone retires to the well appointed and stocked bar.

During winter months the club holds two sessions of short mat bowls each week in the Clubhouse. RLSBC has three teams in the Stratford Short Mat league, and also plays friendlies against other clubs.

Pump Room Gardens Bandstand

Highlight • Monument

The original Bandstand was manufactured in 1899 by Walter McFarlane & Co, of the Saracen Foundry, Glasgow, (item no 224 in their catalogue of iron goods.)  Similar models were cast for many equally affluent towns up and down 19th century Britain.  During restoration, amongst other things, ‘Lost Art’ discovered that under the 150 years’ worth of Paint, some  cast iron sections were so badly corroded that the ironwork had deteriorated beyond repair. Those parts had to be copied,  by casting  identical sections, involving painstaking construction of replica moulds.  Talking to camera, the restorers at ‘Lost Art’ expressed their enormous admiration for the men who manufactured the original pieces, and their own great pleasure in using their skills to restore and where needed, reproduce matching pieces.
