River Cerne and the Cerne Abbas Giant

Highlight • Trail

The River Cerne gracefully winds its way through Cerne Abbas, meandering down the valley for about 10 miles before eventually converging with the River Frome at Dorchester. It has earned the endearing title of the "friendly river" due to the consistent bond it has shared with the villages lining its course across history. Along its tranquil journey, numerous significant landmarks have been thoughtfully erected in proximity to its banks.

Cerne Abbas Village Restaurants

Highlight • Restaurant

Lunch stop - there are two pubs or do what I did and get a freshly baked Cornish Pastie, banana and cup of tea and a fiver from the village shop.

Abbots Bed & Breakfast and Tearoom

Highlight • Restaurant

A great stop for cream tea on any ride. Their local clotted cream allocation is another level!

You won't find much bike parking space but you can prop them against the window so you can see them while you enjoy a cuppa and something to eat.

There's also B&B rooms if you fancy an overnighter. More at abbotsbedandbreakfast.co.uk/the-tearoom

One of our group got a puncture so recommend tubeless if you want to go fast down it.
CAUTION water drain bumps all the way down (prepare for liftoff).
Some hidden potholes but very few and mostly towards edge. Otherwise fairly smooth.
Note: if it’s your thing, the strava segment goes all the way down past the farm, all the way to the road. Cheeky...

Gravel Track to Upper Sydling

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This seems to be a real hot spot to see wildlife esp birds. Several buzzard, some hares and lots of other birds mobbing the buzzards, riding the air currents there. Looking into a valley.
Tough cycling in places but worth it.

If you’re wandering through the Dorset downs and stumble upon the Cross and Hand, don’t worry—you haven't accidentally walked onto the set of a low-budget folk horror movie.
This little limestone pillar is essentially the world’s oldest, most confusing GPS. Here’s the lowdown on this weird piece of rock:
1. It’s a Pillar with an Identity Crisis
Sitting on the high ridge of Batcombe Hill, the Cross and Hand is a small stone pillar that looks like it’s been through a very long, very boring war. On one side, it features a carved hand, and on the top, there’s a cross. People have been arguing about what it is for centuries. Is it a boundary marker? A waypost? A very uncomfortable stool for a tired giant? Nobody knows for sure, but "Ancient Monument" sounds way more dignified.

Cerne Abbas Giant

Highlight • Monument

Ride down Acreman Street for a marvellous view of the Cerne Abbas Giant.

Measuring at 55 metres (180 ft) high, the origin of the figure of a man wielding a club on Trendle Hill is unknown.

The chalk figure is often thought to be ancient, yet there is no evidence for its existence prior to drawings found from the early 1700s.

It is made from a series of narrow, small trenches filled with chalk rubble, and is maintained by the National Trust.
