Glasshouses Village and Lake

Highlight • Settlement

Glasshouses is a pretty village on the River Nidd in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Nidderdale Way passes just to the north of the village, while the Six Dales Trail skirts its southern end. To the south is the dramatic Guise Cliff and it's lovely woodland. On the top of the cliffs you can find the Grade II-listed Yorle's Folly and discover beautiful views across classic Yorkshire pastureland.

Glasshouses Dam

Highlight • Structure

Glasshouses Mill, which the dam served, was initially a corn mill but later transitioned to flax processing in the early 1800s. The dam was built in 1850 by brothers John and George Metcalfe, who expanded the mill and its operations. The mill was a prosperous business, employing around 250 people and known for its responsible employment practices. By the late 19th century, the decline of linen led local mills to produce jute and hemp, but Glasshouses Mill continued flax spinning until the death of George Metcalfe Jr. in 1898. Following his death, the mill struggled, eventually declaring bankruptcy in 1907. The dam is now a recreational area, offering opportunities for fishing, skating in winter, and water sports in summer, although it was literally bone dry when I passed in May 2025 (see photos).

St Mary's Church Ruins

St Mary’s is a characterful ruin nestled among trees overlooking Nidderdale. The church was built in the 13th century. There are some great views around the church.

Pateley Bridge

Highlight • Settlement

A village that's still riding high on the 2014 Tour de France hype, Pateley Bridge is a real treat when you pass through on a bike. A lot of idyllic stone houses in this small market town. In 2016 it won a national award for its high street and the locals really take pride in their environment. The local delicacy is the Pateley Pie and they reckon it's best to try it from one of the two local butchers.

Pateley Bridge — Market Town

Highlight • Historical Site

Hailed as the 'Capital of Nidderdale', Pateley Bridge is a pretty market town and a haven for hikers. There are lots of footpaths and routes starting from the town, including the iconic Nidderdale Way. Fun fact: Pateley Bridge has the oldest sweet shop in the world. Opened in 1827, the shop is located in one of the town's oldest buildings, which dates from 1661.

Stone Bridge, Pateley Bridge

Highlight • Monument

The bridge at Pateley Bridge is a Grade-II listed 18th century structure with three segmental arches - rather impressive. Completely central in the town (or is it a bigger village?... hm...). It's a pleasant place. The name "Pateley" means "a path in a clearing". Not much of that left these days!
