Wolfscote Dale

Highlight • Viewpoint

Wolfscote Dale is an idyllic limestone dale, close to Hartington. The crystalline River Dove flows through the heart of this steep-sided dale, which has dramatic screes, cliffs and caves towering above it. The wildflower meadows beside the river are the perfect place to stop for a moment and take it all in. While equally beautiful, Wolfscote is usually quieter than nearby Dovedale.

Choice of Bridge or Stepping Stones to cross the river, pretty spot with lovely views up & down the Dove. This is the point between Wolfscote Dale and Beresford Dale.

Beresford Dale is absolutely beautiful. The sparkling river flows over multiple weirs and is flanked by stunning limestone cliffs. Emerald green foliage adorns the whole area and the ambience is made complete by the backdrop sound of birds and the babbling of the river. Stunning!!

'Beresford Dale is a narrow tree lined dale, hemmed in by limestone cliffs. On the right high above the dale stood Beresford Hall. A tower built close to the sight of the old hall is all that remains. The tower is visible along the path from Hartington. Pike Pool a little further on gets its name from the rocky tor that rises up out of the river like a pike. The river runs dark and deep, the depth maintained by weirs on this section you can understand why the river gets its name from the Gaelic word dubh, meaning black.' (info from snapthepeaks.co.uk)

Biggin Dale Mine Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

This is a great cave to explore. It is quite deep and narrow, resembling a long thin corridor, which opens out into a small chamber at the end. Small Stalactites can be seen forming on the roof of the cave. A torch is required after the first few feet as it is very dark. It is also a bit wet underfoot and so suitable footwear would be advisable.

Biggin Dale

Highlight • Cave

Biggin Dale is a beautiful nature reserve managed by the National Trust with flower rich grasslands, rocky screes and rare wildlife. It is a lovely gentle walk although there are some parts which are rough and stony underfoot. There is a cave in Biggin Dale which extends some 50m into the hillside.
