Thirsk Market Place and Clock Tower

Highlight • Rest Area

The market place here in Thirsk is its vibrant centre full of cafes and an open air market on Mondays and Saturdays.

It is famous for its racecourse and the former home of James Herriot, vet and author of the books which inspired 'All Creatures Great and Small', the hit BBC series. His house and vet surgery are now a museum, 'The World of James Herriot'.

Thirsk Market Place Clock Tower

Highlight • Rest Area

We started our tour at this car park which is in the centre of Thirsk. Very clean and well looked after toilets across the road from the car park.
On our return we were easily spoilt for choice of where to eat. Pubs fish and chips bakeries a great place to spend some down time

Helperby Village

Highlight • Settlement

Helperby is a lovely village with lots of character, even though in the 17th century a fire ripped through the village taking out all the historic buildings.

There is a lovely cafe and deli in Helperby Stores which is popular with cyclists. Well worth a stop for a meal or coffee and cake if you are passing by.

Helperby & Myton Lane

Highlight • Cycleway

Helperby & Myton Lane as well as Hall Lane to the south are quiet, flat lanes that feel more like riding along a private driveway than a public road.

The tree-lined roads are beautiful in autumn with the golden colours and in spring when flanked by yellow daffodils.
