Spectacularly situated at one of the highest points in the North York Moors National Park, the Lion is a 16th-century inn that serves good food and offers bed and breakfast accommodation. Occupying an elevated perch at 1,325 feet (404 m) on Blakey Ridge, the inn enjoys excellent views of Rosedale and Farndale. It's a marvellously remote objective for any walk on the beautiful moors.

Young Ralph Cross

Highlight • Monument

Young Ralph Cross stands at the meeting point of two moorland roads, high on windswept Danby High Moor. It has become an emblem of the North York Moors National Park and is the centre of various old folk tales.

The 10-foot high (3 m) gritstone cross is of uncertain age, with some historians suggesting 11th-century origins. There was once a letter 'R' carved on its south face, though it is no longer visible today.

Fat Betty Waymarker

Highlight • Viewpoint

Fat Betty is a waymarker and boundary marker on Danby High Moor. It is thought to date from the 12th century and may once have had a wooden cross atop.

A wonderful tradition exists at Fat Betty of leaving a gift of food for any travellers who pass by after you and need a snack to help them on their way. So if you are at risk of bonking and are out of food, this is the place to sort you out.

Blakey Ridge

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Stunning views. The climb is a long, steady slog both ways, but rewarded with a great descent into Castleton (heading north) or Hutton-le-Hole (south)
