Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal Towpath Cycle Route

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A great alternative to the road... fully paved so doable on any bike. A great way to get from Abergavenny to the Cycle Route 49... which follows the canal.

Gilwern Halt Railway Station Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Here are the remains of the Gilwern Halt railway station on the now abandoned Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny railway. Two platforms and a bridge including stairs are left and can be visited via the cycle path #46.

The Tyla (Gilwern to Pwll Du) Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Outstanding views make this route a must, but be aware that as the road is no longer open to motor vehicles, it is no longer maintained so you will find a fairly poor surface with loose chippings.

Consider a gravel bike or road bike with fatter tyres.

Keeper's Pond is a beautiful little pond near the summit of the Blorenge mountain. There is an information sign and a conveniant parking place next to it, where you can park your bike (or car) and have a little stroll around.

Steep climb on gravel but worth it for the views.

Wow! Leaving Newport I was already very impressed by the start of my tour over the Monmouthshire Canal and then this; the path along the Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal is a real highlight!

You ride on a narrow dirt-trail along the calm waters, idyllically framed by shady, old fairy tale trees. The trail tapers regularly as it passes under any of the numerous bridges, all of which are numbered.

I rode here during the week and I hardly met anyone. I'd imagine it'll be busier at the weekend though!
