Church of San Michele, Coreglia Antelminelli

The village of Coreglia Antelminelli was born during the early Middle Ages, when the castle was built and a small community developed around it. The castle was the first fief of the Rolandinghi lords of Loppia, then an advanced sentinel of the Republic of Lucca. In 1316 it became a possession of Castruccio Castracani, a great Lucca captain and Ghibelline leader who, in the same year, became lord of Lucca. In 1341, Coreglia falls into the hands of the Florentines, from whom Francesco Castracani degli Antelminelli takes it back in 1352. Under Francesco Castracani the town reached its maximum splendor. Francesco Castracani probably enlarged the church, endowing it with outstanding works of art, and took on the name of Count of Coreglia in 1355. After 1369 the seat of the ancient vicar passed from Coreglia to Borgo a Mozzano. In the first half of the century, during the attacks conducted by the Florentines and their allies, he always remained faithful to Lucca.
