Gorizia/Nova Gorica

Highlight • Settlement

Gorizia / Nova Gorica is a special city in many ways and definitely worth a visit. The city is divided into two parts. Gorizia is the larger Italian part, Nova Gorica the Slovenian and smaller part. After the Treaty of Saint-Germain, the city, which until then belonged to Austria-Hungary, became Italian.

In May 1945 Tito advanced with his Yugoslav partisans to the Isonzo / Soca. In 1947, in the Peace of Paris, the new border between Italy and Yugoslavia was decided. The division of the city was sealed. The border was set arbitrarily along the railway line. Today, instead of barbed wire and high fences, colorful flower pots mark the border between Slovenia and Italy.

In 2025, the twin city, along with Chemnitz in Germany, will bear the title of European Capital of Culture.

Otherwise, Gorizia is just a beautiful, manageable city with nice cafes and restaurants, pedestrian zone and great opportunities for mountain biking in the area.

It dates back to the 11th century, and has been modified several times, with the addition of bastions and towers and used for different functions, from administrative center to barracks, to prison. The castle was bombed during the First World War. The patient reconstruction work started in the 1930s has given the castle that fascinating medieval air. It contains galleys, weapons of the time and beautiful rooms.

Fountain of Neptune

Highlight • Monument

Once Neptune looked towards Vienna, and the three tritons looked towards the sources of the three important watercourses for Gorizia: the Isonzo river, the Vipacco river and the Corno torrent.
The water that fed the fountain came precisely from this last source: first with wooden pipes, then gradually the materials followed one another according to technological progress.
At the time, the waters from the source of the Corno torrent were considered the purest of all.
