Stemberghaus Charcoal Works (HWN 60)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

A charcoal burner museum, an inn and a stamp office for the Harz hiking nobility await you here. If you've been wondering how the charcoal that grills your steak through is produced, you'll find out here. In addition to real charcoal, liquid charcoal is also available in the shop. Does it burn just as well as the real one? There is a parking lot on the premises.

One of the most ingenious views of the Bodetal awaits you at the Schöneburg refuge. High above Altenbrak, the view extends far east into the valley. You can reach the refuge from Altenbrak from the fork of the Hexen-Stieg, from the riding stables at the dam or from the Stemberghaus. The climb from Altenbrak is the most difficult approach. There is also a stamp of the Harz hiking pin here as a reward.

From the dam you have a wonderful panoramic view. But on weekends it's very crowded here when the weather is nice. No place where you can enjoy the peace!

Rappbode Dam

Highlight • Monument

The 106 meter high Rappbodetalsperre is located directly at the entrance to the Bodetal and has been protecting the villages in the valley from flooding for over 50 years.
The Rappbodetalsperre is 415 meters long and with a height of 106 meters it is also the largest dam in Germany. It is able to hold a water surface of 390 hectares and more than 109 million cubic meters of water.
The Rappbodetalsperre forms the core of a large-scale dam system in the Eastern Harz, which consists of the Rappbode and Hassel pre-dams, the transfer dam at Königshütte, the Kalte Bode flood protection basin (almond wood reservoir) near Königshütte, as well as the dam and the Wendefurth pumped storage plant.

Walking the bridge is really great. Due to the corona, this is currently only possible in one direction, on the dam wall next door you can then go back and see the imposing bridge from the side.

December 30, 2025,Wanderrunde - Köhlerhütte, Hängebrücke, Pumpspeicherwerk, Talsperre Wendefurth und Rotestein -
On the penultimate day of this year, we hiked a beautiful loop of about 15 km in crisp, sunny weather! We started from the Stemberghaus charcoal works in the Harz Mountains. Almost all the paths were frozen. We hiked past the Rappbode Dam, with its close-up view of the suspension bridge, and the Wendefurth Dam, with its lovely view of …

During my hike around the Rappbode Dam with Harald from fit-wandern, I missed a few places nearby, which I decided to revisit on this tour.

I started at the Stemberghaus charcoal kiln, heading towards Schöneburg Castle high above the Bode Valley. Along the way, you can walk directly on the ridge of the rocky spur, slightly above the main hiking …

Finally a WE WITH a child WITHOUT an appointment or similar 😀... that had to be used. The suspension bridge should be the goal. So start early, park in Wendefurth and quickly complete the first 3 km. At 9 a.m. we were almost alone there, at half past nine the first brave ones jumped and from 10 a.m. it got …

Thanks for the like!
After our long tour with all our luggage on the Swabian Alb and on the upper Danube, this was almost a trifle. The backpacks as light as a feather 😁
And with the clear, cool windy weather with lots of sun, this tour was just plain fun! Wonderful grass paths and light beech forests alternated with …

At 9 a.m. I arrived at the Titan suspension bridge over the Rappbodetalsperre and had it all to myself. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the longest suspension bridge in Europe.

After a lot of amazement, discovery and crossing the bridge, I hiked a good 10 km.
