Himmelpfort Monastery Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

This is where Himmelpfort got its name from. In the 13th century, the Cistercian monastery "Coeli Porta" (Heaven's Gate) was founded by Margrave Albrecht. Although the centuries have not been kind to it, there are still some remains to be seen here, and with a little imagination you can imagine the old monastery complex.

Himmelpfort Lock

Highlight • Structure

The first lock between the Haussee and the Stolpsee was built in connection with the navigability of the Woblitz in 1752. In order to accommodate the growing shipping on the waters there, a lock was built between 1879 and 1882 according to the Finow standard, reconstructed in 1907 and renovated and rebuilt in 1976. Before the reconstruction in 1976, the lock chamber had sloping gravity walls made of bricks with driven wooden piles for mooring the ships.

Lychen: Old Town and Historic City Gates

Highlight • Historical Site

Margrave Johann I founded the city in 1248. It was given a six-meter high city wall and three gate towers, only a few of which have survived in Fürstenberger and Stargarder Tor. In 1302 the city fell to Mecklenburg. 150 years later, Margrave Johann von Brandenburg recaptured the city. The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and two large fires (1648, 1732) destroyed almost the entire city several times. During the Seven Years' War (1756–1763) Lychen came under Swedish occupation. Parts of today's urban area were owned by the Himmelpfort monastery in the Middle Ages.

Retzow Church Ruins

Highlight • Religious Site

The church ruin Retzow stands in the middle of the cemetery, which was once surrounded by a field stone wall. In the war between Mecklenburg on the one hand and Brandenburg and Pomerania on the other, which led to the conquest of Lychen in 1440, Retzow was destroyed along with the church.

The Retzow church was built as a rectangular stone building without a tower in the 2nd half of the 13th century. The church has a bevelled pedestal. A portal led from the west, two from the south to the church. The sacristy on the eastern part of the north side was connected to the church by a small door. The door vestments are all but torn down to small parts, the window walls, however, are largely preserved, especially the pointed arched east window. The hole for the locking bar of the west door is still clearly visible.

The belfry used to stand near the current parking lot. He was transferred to the cemetery in 1966 and renewed.
