Monsheim Castle

Highlight • Castle

First mentioned in the 14th century as the moated castle “Veste Monsheim”. Today's castle complex was built in 1651 by the "Lords of Wachenheim". From 1780 to 1852 the property was owned by the von Gagern family. Heinrich von Gagern, the President of the National Assembly in 1848, was the most important resident. The castle was later owned by Baron Heyl zu Herrnsheim, and the tenant was the Knauff family with the women's riding school. The Monsheimer Hinkelstein, one of the largest monoliths in Rheinhessen (which I unfortunately didn't see), also stands in the courtyard. Today the castle is privately owned.

Just a few meters from here is the bird trail. There you will find numerous information boards and a photogenic viaduct along the Pfrimm and jungle-like forest, and you will continue straight into the Zellertal.

Lenhard Tower (Sprenger Tower) Pfeddersheim

Highlight • Historical Site

The tower, also popularly known as the "Sprengerturm", was built around 1500. Since the 19th century it is inhabited. During the renovation in 1997, it received an additional attic storey based on historical models, the extension was renewed and enlarged.

The building was built between 1760 and 1770 as the so-called "castle" of the von Orb family. The stately, two-story building is made of solid stone and plastered. Corner pilasters with ashlar and cornices that separate storeys create a structure on the exterior; the windows are framed by stone in segments like arches. The building is covered with a mansard roof with dormers. It has been used as the town hall since the 19th century and still houses the local police station
Opposite the town hall is the former peace court and prison. Once the "counterpart" to the "castle" of the von Orb family was also called "Schlößchen". Around 1835 the quarry stone building was then used as a peace court with three "arrest cells". Today the building is used for residential purposes 🚴‍♂️

- In the middle of the heart of Pfeddersheim stands the citizen tower built in 1611, the only remaining tower in the southern city wall, which was extensively and completely restored in 2000. 🚴‍♂️

- The Lehnhardsturm or Sprenferturm was built around 1500. It has been privately owned since the 19th century. 🚴‍♂️

War Memorial (1903) - Monsheim/Alzey 🚴‍♂️
The memorial was created in 1903 as an electroformed sculpture by the WMF company in Geislingen/Steige and was ceremoniously dedicated on May 10, 1903. It depicts an infantryman with a captured French flag. A special feature of the memorial is the commemoration of a victim of the 1900 China campaign (Boxer Rebellion). The fallen marine Friedrich Weber was the son of Mayor Jakob Weber, who dedicated the memorial.
In 2001, the memorial was restored by the Regensburg-based company Haber and Brandtner with financial support from the monument preservation office and the people of Monsheim. 🚴‍♂️
