Veerseniederung Nature Reserve

The nature reserve "Veerseniederung" is located east of Scheeßel in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) and is approx. 442 ha. In the south borders the nature reserve "Hemslinger Moor".

The Veerse is a tributary of the Wümme. In contrast to the straightened and dammed upper reaches of the Veerse (in the area of the heath circle), the middle and lower reaches are still in a relatively natural state and therefore particularly rich in species. The Veerse is the habitat of numerous fish species, such. B. the rare and European-protected Steinbeißer and the Mühlkoppe, as well as lampreys (river and brook lamprey). The lampreys are not fish but belong to the Rundmäulern. Instead of a jaw, they have a suction disc with which they can attach to fish. On the banks of the Veerse u. a. the otter and the green mermaid, a bright grassy dragonfly species. The Green River Mermaid likes to settle down in the high-perennial stands on the shore during the mating season.

For the Veerse and the Lünzener Bruchbach the preservation and the development as near-natural flowing waters as well as the preservation and new creation of water edge strips for the reduction of burdensome substance and sediment entries are two of the objectives of the ordinance. Of great importance is the protection of species-rich meadows and pastures that revive the landscape.
