Lorsch Abbey Gatehouse (King's Hall)

Highlight • Historical Site

Around the old Lorsch monastery you will find many nice cafés and bars that offer the perfect end to a tour. The monastery complex itself can also be visited. Here you get an extensive insight into the history of the monastery. The entire complex is a real highlight and is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site for nothing.

This locomotive is in the fenced port area. It used to be used in the harbor to maneuver wagons. Today it is a monument and can be viewed and photographed from the path to the ferry. In the evening the lights of the locomotive are illuminated.

Rhine Promenade - Rheindürkheim/Worms - 🚴‍♂️

The village is located about eight kilometers north of the city of Worms, directly on the Rhine.
The post-war coat of arms of Worms-Rheindürkheim today features a quartered shield. The first field, in black, depicts a crowned lion, intended to establish the historical connection to the Electorate of the Palatinate (Palatinate Lion). The field below, with three silver eagles on a blue background, refers to the temporary landlords, the Counts of Leiningen. In the upper left quarter, a gold heraldic symbol with a blue key crossed by a blue bishop's staff is intended to commemorate the Bishopric of Worms. In the lower left quarter, a silver symbol with a blue boat hook and a blue scythe refers to the village's own tradition.
Traces of settlement in Rheindürkheim and the surrounding area range from the Neolithic period to Celtic and Roman settlements. On October 21, 812, Werner I (Prefect of the Eastern Lands) donated a farmyard, including a house and two yokes of arable land, to the Lorsch Monastery. He was the son-in-law of Adeltrud, married to Count Eberhard (Sieghardinger), who donated Ibersheim estates to the monastery four times. 🚴‍♂️
In addition to the Electorate of the Palatinate, the Bishopric of Worms, the St. Paul's Abbey there, and the Counts of Leiningen are documented as lords of the village. Totally destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Electorate of the Palatinate Succession, the rebuilt Rheindürkheim, like the entire left bank of the Rhine, became part of France in 1798. Until 1814, it was part of the Donnersberg Department and assigned to the Bechtheim Canton. In 1816, it became part of Rhenish Hesse and thus belonged to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. In 1848/49, guerrillas, supporters of the Baden Revolt, and Hessian-Prussian troops fought each other on the municipal border between Rheindürkheim and Bechtheim/Mettenheim. On March 26, 1945, the 45th US Division marched in, ending the Nazi Party's reign of violence. It crossed the Rhine here to the right bank. Rheindürkheim became part of the new state of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1945. 🚴‍♂️

Great Rastbaenke directly on the Rhine, unfortunately only by foot via a staircase to reach. Location and view make up for it.
