Margaretha Windmill (Hemmingstedt)

Highlight • Monument

HISTOUR point H22
Dutch windmill Hemmingstedt

In 1852 Christian Janßen applied for a building permit for a post mill in Hemmingstedt, which had probably been in a different location beforehand. Her cap was thatched. She was struck by lightning in 1858.

A mountain Dutchman took over her successor. In 1906 a new steam mill was built with a 15 meter high chimney, which was connected to the east side of the windmill by a vaulted corridor. The thatched roof was replaced by a cardboard roof. In 1922 a new grain store was built. In 1924, Max Suhr built a nacelle for a crude oil engine (southwest and west).

The wind operation was discontinued in 1977. When Müller Otto Carstens died in 1979, the mill was closed. A year later, the Margaretha mill was listed as a historical monument. In 1987 it was restored: it received a new cross made of sail wings, a new compass rose and a horizontal casing.

St. Andreas Church, Weddingstedt

Highlight • Religious Site

The church is named after Saint Andrew, a disciple of Jesus.

It was first mentioned in documents in 1140, but according to current knowledge it already existed before 1070, burned down in 1559 and a new church was built on the foundations within the next 40 years.

It is one of the oldest churches in Dithmarschen.

Since 2008, extensive renovation work has been carried out on the exterior and interior of the traditional church, which was completed in 2010.

The church was reopened on October 3, 2010.

In autumn 2013, the bells, which include the oldest bell in Dithmarschen,

received new clappers, a new control system and some new motors.

In summer 2014, the Walcker organ was extensively renovated.

There is a dead end at the junction, but you can get through it easily by bike. Short gravel section with beautiful lakes and fishing ponds
