Peenemünde Memorial Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

During the Thirty Years War, King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden landed in the small town in 1630. A memorial stone in front of the little church reminds of this. Until 1945 Peenemünde belonged to Kröslin on the mainland and had no church. However, Friedrich Kräger - his name is noted on a plaque - built a cemetery chapel in 1876. Since the construction of the Army Research Institute in 1936, it has been neglected. It was replaced by a new building on the 50th anniversary of the 1943 bombing. The interior of the octagonal half-timbered building is a memorial to the victims of Peenemünde and a Christian symbol of hope. The walls are black and white. The altar is dominated by a tablet with the 5th commandment: You should not kill.
