Pfrimm Valley Viaduct

Highlight • Monument

That was the former railway line from Mainz over Alzey to Kaiserslautern.
This route ends now in Kirchheimbolanden, because shortly before the end of WW2 the bridge near Marnheim was blown up by German soldiers. These are the remnants of it.

Zellertal Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The idea of building the "Zellertal Memorial" was born soon after the First World War and the memorial was officially inaugurated on July 15, 1928. It is dedicated to "the Palatinate and Hessian fallen soldiers as they fought and died together in enemy territory".

Each of the 6 pillars of the pillared hall stands for a Zellertal community: Einselthum, Harxheim, Niefernheim, Zell, Mölsheim and Wachenheim. Due to its special location, its openwork, upward-pointing shape and its height of 15 meters and a diameter of 6.5 meters, it still has a special long-distance effect.

Every year on the “Memorial Day” in November, citizens of all Zellertal communities meet for a joint commemoration ceremony for those who died in the two world wars.

Roßmarkt Fountain (1985) – Alzey/Worms ‍🚴‍♂️
In 1985, the Neustadt artist created the Rossmarkt Fountain. The horse and fountain represent a memorial to a famous son of Alzey: the legendary minstrel and knight Volker von Alzey from the Nibelungenlied. The epic describes the noble Volker as a "man of fighting prowess" who allegedly carried the banner of the Burgundian king in the campaign against Saxony. This proves that, despite being of lower nobility, he held high military rank. Fighting against the Huns, the Nibelung hero met his death in the Battle of Etzelburg near Gran. In addition to Volker von Alzey's powerful horse (a status symbol of knights), the design of the fountain bowl is also inspired by the Nibelungen saga. According to legend, Hagen von Tronje, tutor to the Burgundian king, sank the Nibelung treasure in the Rhine. Even though the historical figure of Volker von Alzey is difficult to grasp and much of the tradition is based on the Nibelungenlied, it is hard to deny that the person and the myth are still present in Alzey today. A glance at the city's coat of arms shows a minstrel's fiddle beneath the Palatine lion. The Alzey-Worms district also features the instrument in its coat of arms. 🚴‍♂️
