St. Katharinen Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of Rießen stands in front of the eastern entrance of the village and is surrounded by the cemetery. Her patron saint is St. Catharina, so the church bears the name of St. Catherine's Church.
The first written mention can be found in 1234, but it is believed that the oldest part of the church - the approximately 140 m2 large center, in which now stands the altar - was built about 1180 to 1250. For several years, the church has been renovated and restored and will soon belong to the most beautiful churches in the parish and Sprengel.
Particularly worth seeing is the organ, it is a dating from the first half of the 18th century Christian father organ with hochrechteckigem Organprospekt with baroque repertoire.
The church tower is about 23 meters high; he carries on a massive base a wooden spire with two bells and a clock. In the tower hall stands a stone baptismal font of Romanesque style with carved representations. Experts estimate that it dates from the 10th century. The richly decorated wooden baptismal font with removable lid was donated in 1656. The pulpit is a foundation of the mercenary leader Hilmar von Münchhausen, who died in 1573 in Steyerberg. The family's burial chamber is attached to the church, reminiscent of a remarkable wooden epitaph.

Beautiful path through the fairytale forest of Steyerberg. It's smooth running on beautiful forest floors. In between there are many miniature buildings that pass on the stories from childhood. A good change from guessing the stories as you walk past.

The Klappermühle is located at the Langhorst Kuhlengraben or on the forest nature trail. Since 1958, the small mill has been set up every spring by the local history society and dismantled again in the autumn.
