Ungeheuersee

Highlight • Lake

The Ungeheuersee is a flat bog pond, which is fed by the Krumbach. As part of the only raised bog in this low mountain range, the lake has been protected as a natural monument since the 1930s. The name has nothing to do with monsters, but derives from the words "Unger" for forest pasture and "Heyer" for enclosures. A very idyllic place.

Refuge with rest benches with tables and a great view.
In mid-2020 there was no sign of the processionary moth anymore - no signs either...

Roman Villa Weilberg

Highlight • Historical Site

Here on the Weilberg there was a large estate (Villa Rustica) in Roman times. The place had already been settled by the Celts. The Roman complex was built around 20 AD. It is one of the largest of its kind in the Palatinate.
In addition to wine, grain was also grown: the 7.5 hectare farm had a wine press and a grain kiln. There were stables, stores and workshops, a pottery and a blacksmith shop. The whole yard was surrounded by a wall. The villa reached its greatest extent in the early 4th century. The main building at that time had a front length of over 100 meters. Around 352 AD the manor was destroyed during the Alemanni invasions and only managed on a smaller scale.

On the cycle path you can cycle leisurely through the vineyards of Kallstadt. Although "mountains" isn't quite right. It's slightly hilly here and you can enjoy the view without any further effort.

June 6, 2024,Gravel-Tour Pfälzerwald Ungeheuersee - Rahnfels - Schlagbaum
Today my motivation was at rock bottom in the afternoon. Luckily I quickly abandoned the idea of doing a pyramid training session on the roller - not in this dream cycling weather. So I quickly planned this tour. I often cycle the route from Bobenheim to Lindemannsruhe via the Ungeheuersee - but it is also simply brilliant. 🤩 It was …

First 11 a.m., then 1 p.m.
Wetter.de seemed to be just guessing.
The rain radar also said 1 p.m.
But Wetter.de was now at 3 p.m. 🙄

I was supposed to be watering the garden, which I
a) didn't feel like doing and
b) would be unnecessary if it rained.
