Weingarten Town Center and the Walzbach Stream

Highlight • Settlement

Settlement remains from the Roman and Merovingian periods were found in the district. The village originated from a courtyard of the Weißenburg monastery in what is now northern Alsace, which of course lost its possessions again in 985 through the so-called Salic church robbery. In 1504 Duke Ulrich von Württemberg destroyed the village, which became a well-known market town after reconstruction. The watchtower was built in 1589 in order to be able to recognize approaching war hordes at an early stage. The tower was on the trade routes to Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Augsburg and Basel and was used by troops from the Palatinate as an observation tower for the escort teams. Weingarten was Palatinate until 1803, after which it came to the Grand Duchy of Baden as a result of the French coalition wars. (Wikipedia)

After the rivers Kinzig and Murg broke through into the Rhine around 7,000 years ago, the former river bed became swampy and moor areas formed, including the Weingartener Moor. Some of the moor has a very high water table [. It was designated as a nature reserve on October 11, 1940, as the area was endangered by peat extraction. The surrounding quarry forest and part of the Grötzinger Baggersee followed on July 27, 1984

Grötzingen Quarry Lake

Highlight • Lake

The northern part of the lake lies within the "Weingartener Moor - Bruchwald Grötzingen" nature reserve, which is known for its special amphibian population. Swimming and water sports are not possible here.
On the southern part of the lake, cautious recreational uses such as swimming and sailing are permitted to a limited extent.

View of the Rhine in Leopoldshafen

Highlight • Viewpoint

Beautiful view of the Rhine. There is a ferry here, a restaurant with a beer garden that is well-frequented in summer, and plenty of parking spaces, often used by motorhomes.

Very nice navigable Rhine bank. An avenue which starts from the island of Rott forms the Rheinufer-Radweg, which can be followed upstream by ferryboat rides. :)
