Calvary and Crucifixion Chapel on the way to Maria Trost, Nesselwang

Highlight • Religious Site

From just above the car park at the Alpspitzbahn valley station, a Way of the Cross or Calvary stretches to the Maria Trost pilgrimage chapel. After an initial prayer to Saint Wendelin, Stations I to XIIII line the path with depictions of the path to Golgotha (Latin: Calvariae locus, German: place of the skull - as reported in several gospels (Luke, Mark, John)), with Station XII, the actual crucifixion, being built as a larger chapel. The other stations depict the descent from the cross to the burial. The Maria Trost pilgrimage chapel at the end of the path originated here high above Nesselwang at the end of the 17th century.
