Inn on the Lahn

Highlight • Restaurant

The customs tower of the electors of Trier, a medieval solid building with a rounded narrow front, was built in 1348.
The Lahn formed the border between the electorate of Mainz and Trier until 1803. Customs was raised from 1565 to 1803. The Electorate of Trier benefited from the flourishing iron industry, the products of which were shipped via the Lahn. But because of the customs there were always quarrels between Kurtrier (Niederlahnstein) and Kurmainz, to which Oberlahnstein belonged.
In Niederlahnstein, the building is the lowest (65 m above sea level) and is therefore often affected by floods. It has a striking tower (customs tower), on the left outer facade of which flood marks from 1988, 1993, 1995 indicate the corresponding water level.

The former customs house is now part of the "Wirtshaus an der Lahn".
