Suidbert Church Wriedel

Highlight • Religious Site

The namesake of the community of Wriedel, "Saint Suidbert", was an Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk who was the first missionary from England to set foot on Frisian soil. In 693 he was ordained a bishop in England. In 1345 a place of worship was first mentioned in Wriedel with the name "Capella sancti Swiberti". In 1544 the people of Wriedel were allowed to found their own parish and the church was expanded. The demolition took place in 1827, the building had become dilapidated in the meantime. In the autumn of 1829 the new church was inaugurated. The organ was later donated by the Refardt family from Wulfsode. However, because of its wooden framework, it was more like a barn than a house of God and therefore did not please the people of Wriedel in the long run. According to a design by the Uelzen architects Warnecke, today's church was rebuilt on the same hill as the first chapel and completed in 1913. It offers space for 750 visitors, the pillar arches on both sides of the sanctuary bear the portraits of great evangelical warriors. Three bells ring in the high tower of the church. A new organ has since been purchased and the spire has had to be repaired. Although the church has been modified several times over the past centuries, it was and still is the focal point of the place.
