Mendota Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This is a great trail for beginners and kids, because it's mostly flat; the biggest obstacle is a series of occasional muddy spots to keep you on your toes.

There's a lot to see, too, from the Minnesota River on one side to planes taking off and landing overhead, and historical artifacts in Fort Snelling State Park. (This trail is part of the park.)

This section of the Mendota Trail, just north of the East Trailhead Minnesota River Greenway is really, really beautiful riding through the lush Minnesota River Valley. This great section of riding is on generally smooth, hard-packed dirt trails with little elevation so you can really enjoy your surroundings.

This section of the Minnesota River Greenway is just after you cross the Minnesota River near the East Trailhead. From this spot on the paved trail, you get nice views of the Cedar Avenue Bridge.

View of the Minnesota River

Highlight • Viewpoint

From this spot on the wide, gravel trail, you get great views of the Minnesota River. Also known as Mnísota Wakpá in Dakota, Minnesota River is a 332-mile-long tributary of the Mississippi River in Minnesota. The river's name, derived from the Dakota phrase "Mnisota Makoce," means "land where the waters reflect the sky." Before its official naming in 1852, it was commonly known as the St. Peter River.

You can use this floating platform to ferry yourself and your bike across Nine Mile Creek, which is too deep to wade. Unfortunately for us, the ferry was dismantled for the season the day before, so we had to turn around. Soon the creek will be iced over and then can cross without difficulty.

Lake Nokomis

Highlight (Segment) • Lake

The Lake Nokomis Trail in Minnesota is a 7.3-mile paved path that stretches from Minneapolis to Burnsville, connecting three communities: Minneapolis, Richfield, and Bloomington. This 10-foot-wide trail is popular for biking, walking, jogging, and inline skating, while also being wheelchair accessible. Along its route, the trail passes through parks, residential areas, and near popular attractions like the Mall of America and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. It links to other regional trails, such as the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway and Minnesota River Greenway, with parking available at various points, including Taft Park and the Cedar Nichols Trailhead. Lake Nokomis spans 204 acres and is a true natural highlight of the trail.
