We call the Grand Ried (from the Alemannic "Rieth", reed) the central part of the Alsace plain which extends between Sélestat and Strasbourg, on the flood-prone lands of the Ill and the Rhine. This immense swamp, little by little modified by man, forms a puzzle of wet meadows and small woods of willows and poplars. The floods of the Ill, frequent in spring, and the numerous resurgences of the water table, located at a shallow depth and at a constant temperature all year round, favor the growth of original vegetation (palustrine gladiolus, gentian, iris of Siberia, etc.) and attract many birds, including the sharp-billed curlew, the lapwing, the black-headed gull...

An avenue of 49 plane trees labeled “Remarkable Trees of France”. This bucolic walking path is located on the banks of one of the arms of the Ill called "Muhlbach", because a mill used its current. These majestic plane trees, 13 meters high, over 200 years old, with a rare species and original shape, are a real asset for the preservation of biodiversity and landscapes. They are home to mammals and birds, and serve as a biological reservoir for a diversity of insects that come inside. This path would have been traced in the 19th century by the spinning company located in Huttenheim, to allow workers from Benfeld to get to the factory quickly and to walk in the shade of the trees.

Comfortably located in the lush meadows of Grand Ried, Benfeld is a town with a charming medieval feel. Duly fortified at the beginning of the 14th century and subsequently besieged many times, this former capital of the bailiwick of the bishopric of Strasbourg experienced significant industrial and commercial development in the interwar period. Aside from the major tourist circuits, this dynamic city nonetheless has an interesting architectural heritage, while the marked trails traced in its canton encourage pleasant walks between cultivated fields and lush forests, lakes and the course of the Rhine.

This half-timbered building (1531) owes its usual name, the “laube”, to the hall on its ground floor. The octagonal turret (1619) on its main facade houses a spiral staircase and carries a beautiful wooden automaton clock. To the right of the large dial, Archduke Leopold of Austria (1586-1632), prince-bishop of Strasbourg, in armor, strikes the quarter hours. On the left, Death holds a scythe and an hourglass which she turns every hour. Above these symbols of wisdom and impartiality appears Stubbehansel, mayor of Benfeld who administered justice until the day when, having betrayed his fellow citizens, he was caught by it. The purse he holds in his left hand evokes the vanity of money, the scepter, that of power. The large dial indicates Paris time, which is 29 minutes ahead of Strasbourg time, given in the small dial at the bottom. This set was installed in 1856 by Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué, creator of the astronomical clock of Strasbourg Cathedral.
