The Capitole of Toulouse

Highlight • Historical Site

The Capitol (French Le Capitole) is a building in the French city of Toulouse that houses both the town hall and a theater. The building is located on Place du Capitole in the heart of Toulouse.

As early as 1190, a building for the city council, the Capitouls, was built on this site. The name of the building is derived from these and the Roman Capitol. Since then, Toulouse's municipal administration building has always been located on this site. The complex used to be larger, with halls and outbuildings that had grown over the centuries to suit individual needs. In the 20th century, the buildings on the 2 hectare square were redesigned. The 135 m wide neoclassical facade made of characteristic pink bricks dates from 1760 to a design by Guillaume Cammas. In addition, there is only the Tour des Archives from the 16th century and the galleries of the Cour Henri IV from the 17th century. Parts of the interior date from the 16th century. The Capitol was at the center of the conflicts during the Huguenot uprisings in Toulouse in 1562.

Couvent des Jacobins of Toulouse

Highlight • Religious Site

The Jacobin Monastery is a jewel of medieval art. The sober as well as original, gigantic building boasts a unique church. Strictly austere on the outside, it captivates through the light filledness, the lightness of the vaults, and the double ship, which ends with a spectacular 22-rib stone palm.

Under the altar are the relics of the Dominican Thomas Aquinas. The walls are completely painted in trompe l'oeil style to imitate marble - more noble than brick.

In the cloister, the former refectory, the Marienkapelle and the Antoniuskapelle, which invite for a cool and quiet break, concerts and exhibitions are organized.

Basilica of Saint-Sernin of Toulouse

Highlight • Religious Site

Saint-Sernin is a landmark of Toulouse and holds the rank of a minor basilica. It combines the architectural forms of a hall church, an empore hall church, and – with the low outer side aisles – a basilica.
The pilgrimage church was built over the tomb of Saint Saturninus, Bishop of Toulouse, who died a martyr in 250.

The cathedral was built over several centuries and is therefore good for studying the different architectural styles.
Interesting still the floating organ.
