It looks as if a church (?) had been squeezed into an alley. There is a clock facing the street. The tower has a bell.
You can get a good view of the tower from the inner courtyard behind the row of houses. The passage to the street is blocked off with gates. You get there via the "Rue du Chateau".

Orange Gate

Highlight • Monument

Since 1274, Carpentras belonged to the papal domain of the Comtat Venaissin. Between 1309 and 1314, Pope Clement V made Carpentras – alongside Avignon – his residence. During the term of office of Pope Innocent VI (1352–1362), the city was surrounded by a city wall with 32 towers and four gates to protect it from the plundering mercenary troops of the Grandes Compagnies.

The 27 m high Porte d’Orange (around 1360) with its battlements is the only remaining city gate and is open on the city side as a three-wall gate tower (half-shell tower). It has two plank floors, one above the brick passageway (barrel vault) and the defense platform behind the battlements.

The Rose Garden

Highlight • Other

There is not much left of the former rose garden. We only saw a few rose bushes. But in the middle of the small park with a wonderful cedar tree there is a beautiful villa. Apparently the stamp enthusiasts and the bridge club meet here from time to time.

The Roman arch

Highlight • Other

You are here in the heart of the former Roman settlement. The triumphal arch from 16 BC is fairly well preserved here. It now stands directly in front of the cathedral.

"The Roman triumphal arch, called the Arc de Carpentras, is located at the back of the Palace of Justice. On its east side it shows two prisoners, one dressed in fur (possibly a Germanic), the other in a tunic. It is assumed that this is a man from the Orient due to the exotic clothing for southern Gaul." de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpentras

Saint Siffrein Cathedral

Highlight • Historical Site

The choir dates back to the 5th century in part.
Renovation work was carried out in 2024. The building tells of the long history of Carpentras.

"The former St-Siffrein Cathedral bears the patronage of St. Sifredus (St. Siffrein); it was commissioned by Antipope Benedict XIII in 1404 and completed in 1519, although it was subsequently given a baroque façade in the 17th century. It was built into the city wall. The bishop could attend mass from a small loggia that can be reached via the gallery in the nave. The late Gothic south portal is traditionally called the Porte Juive (Jewish portal) because Jews who converted to Christianity were led through this portal to be baptized." de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpentras
