The Port of Somail

Highlight • Settlement

The port of Somail was the place where the post boat stopped when it came from Toulouse. This hamlet has inspired many painters such as William Moulin or Jean-Noël Le Junter, thanks to its bridge, its chapel and its picturesque setting on the banks of the Canal du Midi.

The Gailhousty dry dock

Highlight • Other

On the opposite bank from the spillway building is a dry dock for boat repair and maintenance.

How does it work? By operating a gate located at the downstream corner of the spillway building, the space between the lock and this gate is transformed into a basin that is filled with water from the Junction Canal. At its highest level, the maintenance platform is submerged, allowing boats to position themselves above it. The downstream gate's sluice gates are then opened to drain the basin. The boat then gently lowers onto the supports provided for this purpose. In a few dozen minutes, the boat is out of the water. The repair work can then begin.

This dry dock was built in the 1980s to replace the one at Sallèles-d’Aude, which was destroyed during modernization work to lengthen the locks.

The Canal de Jonction branches off from the Canal du Midi near its canal bridge over the river "Cesse" and flows after about 5km and about 21 meters deeper into the river Aude. This is connected to the Canal de la Robine, which branches off 650m downstream on the opposite, right bank of the Aude.
From here there is already a direct connection from the Canal du Midi to the Mediterranean Sea.
There is a small bar directly at the junction, which unfortunately was closed at the time I came by.

Canal Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

One of the many structures of the canal du Midi. Suggestive canal bridge that allows the stream to be crossed.

La Cesse Aqueduct

Highlight • Bridge

Here is another canal bridge, that of La Cesse, at the intersection of the Canal du Midi. The two rivers cross without knowing each other, but the bridge offers magnificent views of the surroundings. This bridge was built by Jean Goudet, an engineer who solved the problem of the floods of La Cesse. This structure is 64 meters long and 14 meters high.
