A 12th-century church, to which side chapels were added in the 15th century. The interior is strikingly dark. Noteworthy are an old wall fresco, the remains of an ancient Pieta, and the entrance portal adorned with lions.

Montfort Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Montfort Castle stands on a jagged rock, 90 meters above the Dordogne, at the end of the famous “Cingle de Montfort” river loop in the municipality of Vitrac in the French department of Dordogne.

The complex is located in a park surrounded by walls and was extensively restored in the 19th century. Nothing remains of the previous medieval buildings. The ruins of the left wing were reconstructed, the tower dates from the 15th century, the rest from the 16th century. They used to have pieces from the time of Louis XIII. and Louis XIV's furnished rooms in the basement are accessible to visitors; Now Montfort Castle can no longer be visited.
In its history, Montfort Castle was conquered, burned down and rebuilt three times. During the Albigensian Crusade in the 13th century, Simon IV de Montfort took the castle. During the Hundred Years' War the castle was destroyed under Louis XI. and then destroyed under Henry IV.

A very beautiful loop from our holiday home via Montfort and Vitrac. The trail is mostly easy and leads through beautiful, varied scenery. Only the Fishermen's Path below Chateau Montfort is a bit adventurous – but very charming nonetheless.

In Vitrac, we quickly find our way to L'Ecole Buissonnière, a former school that now houses an art café. With cider …

Very nice walk and very well marked, walk 7 from a booklet from the tourist office with a few trips. Only the trip to the Dordogne is better to skip.

Today we're taking a local hike from our holiday home along the Montfort Loop. It's actually a very pleasant route, a good 8 km long, with no particular difficulties. Before reaching Montfort, however, we deviate from the comfortable circular route and take the Chemin de Pêcheur, which is truly challenging. Steep slopes, slippery roots, and high boulders await us. We …
