Historial of the Great War – Château de Péronne

Highlight • Castle

This fascinating museum with the subject of the First World War covers longer periods. The historial indeed explains in a very interesting way the preparation of the war, the war itself and how Europe was rebuilt after this tragedy.

The museum has two parts: You enter through the Château de Peronne which dates from the 13th century, and was built during the reign of Louis-Philippe. The second structure, which is more recent, dates from 2016. It is the work of architect Henri-Edouard Ariani and is located on the edge of the Cam pond.

Allaines

Highlight • Settlement

allaines is a commune with a rich history. Large quantities of Gallo-Roman vases have been found in the ground. Allaines is said to be the Vicus Helena where the Romans of Aetius won the victory over the Franks of Clodion the Hairy in 448. At the time of the Templars, underground passages were dug under the current church. In 1653, numerous skirmishes took place between the Spanish and the troops of the Lord Marshal de la Ferté. The bones that are often found in a place called Land of Tombs bear witness to these deadly battles. In 1870, during the siege of Péronne, the Prussian army of Von Goeben came to reform at Allaines, in the Tortille valley, and then headed towards Saint-Quentin, after being defeated by General Faidherbe. Phosphate mining ended in 1895, which had brought the village considerable income. During the First World War, during the Battle of the Somme, on 15 September 1916, the village was retaken by the French army. The losses were heavy, the 60th Infantry Regiment was wiped out and the 44th Infantry Regiment lost 600 soldiers.

The canal must be deep here for these cargo ships to sail through it so fully loaded.
In any case, they stir up a lot of mud, because the canal behind the cargo ships is then filled with brown clouds.

The monument contains a striking sculpture called “La Picarde maudissant la guerre” (The Picard who curses the war). Château de Péronne

Highlight • Castle

The town of Péronne is really charming and deserves a stop.

The Somme here forms natural ponds that surround the city, giving it an undeniable attractiveness. Its old center is on a small hill which dominates the whole.
