Torhout Town Hall

In 1183-1184, Torhout receives town privileges and the first town hall is built on the Market Square, approximately on the site of the current one. In 1578, it is completely destroyed during the religious turmoil of the late 16th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, a new town hall is built at the corner of Hoedenmakersstraat and the Market Square, which is destroyed by fire in 1647. In 1711-1713, the current town hall, in 'German Baroque style', is built on behalf of Karl Philip von Neuburg, lord of Wijnendale (see coat of arms above the portal). 19th-century plans to demolish the town hall, which had become too small, are not realized due to a lack of funds. During the 20th century, the town hall becomes completely freestanding due to the demolition of all adjacent buildings on the rear facade. The rear facade is completely rebuilt in 1951-1952 based on the example of the front facade, and the interior is also thoroughly modernized (1949), with the loss of 18th-century stucco ceilings depicting musical instruments, archery equipment, and writing utensils. In 1995-1997, restoration works are carried out under the leadership of Bruges architect Hubert Davans.

Colloquially known as the Maeres Castle, also called Kasteel Maere d'Aertrycke, it was built between 1868 and 1871 in the Neo-Renaissance (French) style. August Maere, the visionary behind the port of Zeebrugge, was later ennobled and was allowed to add the name d'Aertrycke to his surname. The domain remained in the hands of the family for a long time, but from 1960 part of it became the property of the province of West Flanders. Since 2012, the entire domain has been provincial property and the castle has been transformed into a hotel, restaurant and conference center.
