Het Steen

Highlight • Castle

Het Steen, the oldest building in Antwerp, was built between 1200 and 1225 as the gate of the Antwerp castle. It served as a prison until 1823 and later as a home for wounded soldiers. After the government took it over in 1827, it was quickly sold to a sawmill, but in 1842 the city bought it back. Much of the castle was demolished in the 1880s to make way for a wider canal. The archaeological museum of 1864 was replaced by the National Maritime Museum in 1952. Since October 22, 2021, Het Steen has been renovated into the Antwerp Visitor Center. A 350 meter long pontoon was built along the shore for the Antwerp Cruise Terminal, where cruise ships moor. Construction started in 2018 and was completed in 2021.

Antwerp City Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The town hall is on the list of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. The town hall is a Renaissance building, designed by the architect Cornelis Floris De Vriendt. It was built between 1561 and 1564. The town hall is mainly built in the Renaissance style, but the middle section is already reminiscent of the Baroque. After the thorough restoration in 2018-2022, the town hall is a contemporary, sustainable and open house of government. After the restoration, the town hall is an open house, an icon of valuable immovable heritage on the Grote Markt.

Antwerp is actually located on the Rupel. It ran to Ghent 300,000 years ago, until the Flemish valley was raised by dunes, and the Rupel forced a breakthrough in Hoboken. The Rupel bent towards Antwerp, and was joined by the Scheldt, which turned eastwards at Ghent.

Over the past few thousand years, the Scheldt has evolved in its lower reaches from a river with a purely fluvial character ('rain river') to a tidal river with pronounced maritime characteristics.

Scheldelaan Graffiti Wall

Highlight • Monument

The 900 meter long wall must guarantee water safety in the area. Because color is welcome in this industrial environment, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv and Antwerp Port Authority enlisted the help of graffiti artists.
The wall was painted on both the side of the Scheldelaan and the side of the towpath along the Scheldt. For this, the help of about 80 graffiti artists was called in, via the Ghent non-profit organization Wallin'.
