Wooden Bridge at Wellemeersen

Highlight • Bridge

This beautiful bridge, located in Welle, East Flanders, is unique in the Belgian railway landscape. With a length of 250 meters, it is an impressive piece of craftsmanship.
The entire bridge is made of tropical hardwood (tropical azobe hardwood), which combines durability and natural beauty.
The bridge is a gateway to the nearby De Wellemeersen nature reserve, which covers a vast area of 65 hectares.
Originally there was a steel and concrete bridge, but thanks to smart design, this wooden bridge fits perfectly into the environment.
The bridge connects to the Welle and Kappelmeersenpad, a provincial walking route of 11 km through the beautiful flood area of the Dender.
The African wood requires no additional treatment and should theoretically last a hundred years.
Infrabel invested approximately 950,000 euros in this bridge, 20% of which was financed by the European Union.

Here you have a connection with Liedekerke via the F209 (cycling highway Denderleeuw - Brussels) and the Boeren Krijgroute. The Peasant War Route is a cycling route that takes you through the history of the Peasants' War, an uprising against the French occupation in 1798. The route winds through the most northwestern corner of the Pajottenland: through Affligem, Liedekerke, Roosdaal and Ternat. You will pass picturesque villages, historic sights and cozy cafés, where you can taste various regional beers. The route is 45.9 km long and has an average difficulty level.

A newly laid gravel path along the Dender River. You can also find Hof ter Leeuwe there (outdoor playground).

Here you are on the Brabant bank of the Dender in Pamel, a sub-municipality of Roosdaal. Cycling along the Dender is wonderful, but this sometimes busy road is actually too narrow to fully enjoy.

The statue on the Dender is the Statue of the Fat Van Pamel, a monument in Pamel (Roosdaal) in memory of the popular figure Victor De Klerck, alias 'the Fat van Pamel' (1848-1885). This bronze work of art is located on the edge of the Dender and is by sculptor Patrick van Craenenbroeck. The statue only shows the clothing of the imposing figure, as a symbol of his liberation from his merciless fate. It weighed an estimated 300 kilos and was often watched by the boat pullers who pulled their ships along the towpath1. It made him shy and depressed and he was barely thirty-six years old. The statue was inaugurated on September 9, 2001 and is now a beacon along the Denderkaai. You can also find a playground and a bench there.

The Schiptrekkersbrug is a bridge over the Dender between Denderleeuw and Liedekerke, which is part of the Schiptrekkers cycle route. The bridge is named after the people who used to pull ships across the river using ropes and horses. It was a hard and poor profession, which was also practiced by women and children. The Schiptrekkers Bridge is a tribute to these people, who played an important role in the history of the region. There is a heritage sign on the bridge that tells their story.
