Fort Benoorden Spaarndam

Fort north of Spaarndam is one of the forts of the Defense Line of Amsterdam and was built in 1895. In 1901 the bombproof building was also finished. In 1950 the fort was abandoned and today it is still in exactly the same condition as it was then.

This relatively small fortress is located on the site of a previous early nineteenth century defenses. The domed buildings give a beautiful view over the firing field and the former inundation area, with the buildings of Haarlem still approximately 2 km away in accordance with the Kringenwet of 1853.

Fort south of Spaarndam was the defense of the Slaperdijk with the Westlaan, together with the Fort north of Spaarndam and the access formed by the Noorder Buiten Spaarne and roads running along it. The fort was built in the period 1882-1903. In 1901 the fort was completed with the completion of the concrete bombproof building. To the north of the fort there is a side battery for the front guns in the Liniewal.
