The Lieve Canal

Highlight • River

De Lieve is a historic inland waterway canal that was dug between 1251 and 1269 from Ghent to Damme, originally Aardenburg. The period of prosperity is situated in the 13th and 14th centuries. Despite the silting up of the Zwin (early 14th and early 15th centuries), the digging of the Sasse Vaart in the mid-16th century, and the digging of the Ghent - Bruges canal in 1613-1614, it retained its original function until the beginning of the 18th century. In Ghent, Evergem, and Lievegem, the Lieve has been preserved as an open watercourse in sections. The route within the municipality of Damme has been preserved as a wide strip in the landscape.

Cycle Path Along the Lieve Canal

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Lieve is the oldest canal in Europe. It was dug in the mid-thirteenth century as a connection between Ghent and Damme, in other words as a connection between the Lys and the Zwin and then straight to the North Sea. Now you can make beautiful bike rides along the forgotten canal

Historic Centre of Ghent

Highlight • Historical Site

Ghent grew out of Celtic settlements in the area where the Leie and Scheldt rivers converge. In the Middle Ages, Ghent grew into one of the largest and most important cities in Europe thanks to the flourishing cloth trade. The flax and linen trade and the staple rights acquired by the city on grain also contributed significantly to the city's prosperity. After a short Calvinist period, the city gradually declined until it flourished again towards the end of the 18th century, when it became one of the first industrialized cities on the European mainland.

Beirtjes Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The name refers to the trade in Ghent 'beer' or eel with which the fields were fertilized. Ships with eel moored here to deliver their malodorous stuff.
