The path leads upstream through the Hinterautal, framed by the mighty, steep rock faces of the Karwendelgebirge.
Here at the highest point of the tour, the valley presents itself in its full beauty.

Upper Isar River

Highlight • River

The cycle path along the upper Isar from Scharnitz to the source of the Isar is easy to ride on and leads through an extremely attractive landscape through which the turquoise and sometimes wild Isar flows.

Source of the Isar

Highlight • River

The Isar does not have one source, like most rivers, but several sources converge. That is why the place is not called the Isar source, but the Isar origin.

August 25, 2022,Fahrradtour zur Kastenalm
Ascent from Mittenwald to the gorge bridge is quite steep, at Gasthof Gletscherschliff there is a short stretch due to steps (approx. 150 m). Not recommended on busy weekends.

Today a beautiful tour in a Karwendel valley to the Isarsprung and the Kastenalm. From Leutasch mostly downhill to Scharnitz. From here it goes along a forest road through a very beautiful Karwendel valley past the Isarsprung to the Kastenalm. Lots of photo points along the way cause short breaks. Then a delicious hot elderberry on the mountain pasture. Now …

From Seefeld to Scharnitz and further into the Upper Isar Valley to the springs. Via Mittenwald, then following the Leutascher Ache uphill, we then went back to Seefeld.
The descent down the Bodenbach towards Scharnitz is great.

When in Mittenwald, you obviously have to visit the Isar springs. With the temperature still pleasant, we set off toward Scharnitz and then along the Isar River toward the springs. Here, you have to park your bike for a moment and walk the few hundred meters to the springs. We returned the same way, turning off toward Seefeld in Schwanitz. …

Finally back in this beautiful area. I took it easy on the first day. Mittenwald - Leutasch - Seefeld - Scharnitz - Isarsprung - Mittenwald. The weather was mixed and started with low clouds from which the sun broke through from time to time. Shortly before the finish, the rain got me.

This stage took us from Mittenwald to the source of the Isar River and on to the Kastenalm. Since we stayed in Mittenwald for two nights, we were also able to visit the Leutasch Gorge and explore Mittenwald. The Nature Park Center in Scharnitz is also highly recommended. It was the best stage of the entire tour. There's nothing to …

What a dreamy tour along the Isar River to its source in Scharnitz. A postcard-perfect idyll around every corner. At the Kastenalm, I stopped for some refreshments. I wanted to enjoy the return trip to the fullest. Until, shortly after setting off, I realized I'd lost my wallet with all my credit cards, ID, and driver's license. Searching for it …
