Zug station since 1863
The first station in Zug was built between 1863 and 1864 on what is now Bundesplatz by the architect Jakob Friedrich Wanner.
Zug station has been a gateway to the city and a light-flooded meeting place since November 28, 2003.
The triangular geometry of the modern building was set by the track planners over a hundred years ago. Along these tracks, two longitudinal bodies and a glass facade facing Alpenstrasse form the framework for a central, bright and transparent station hall. At dusk, the light installation by the artist James Turrell transforms the imposing station building into a floating illuminated object. And this is done using only the three colors red, blue and green and the resulting shades during their flowing movements.
These intense lighting moods entice you to look, demanding the attention of passers-by and viewers. Changes in daylight from dusk to night accompany this process and create a place that no longer remains static, but unfolds changing, intense scenarios.
The light art in Zug station could be admired every day from dusk to 11 p.m. until October 10, 2022. Due to the energy shortage, the SBB has decided to take the light art out of service until further notice.
