Former Micheroux Railway Station

Highlight • Monument

Micheroux station is a former Belgian railway station on line 38, from Chênée to Plombières located in Micheroux in the town of Soumagne, in the Walloon region in the province of Liège.
It is now closed and the line has been dismantled, but the building still exists, converted into a restaurant and into a home. It is actually closer to the center of Soumagne than to Micheroux.
After its closure, Micheroux station is one of the few on the line to have escaped demolition. That of Thimister also survived, but the stations of Fléron and Froidthier were demolished.
During its renovation, new openings were made on the ground floor and a large wooden veranda was built where the old quays were.

The rue Tribomont is especially remarkable for the number of bunkers. We can clearly see in the photos the distinction between the bunker and its camouflage.

Soiron Castle

Highlight • Castle

After the death of the last Count of Woestenraedt, the castle was sold to the David family. Ownership later passed to the Neuville family. They rented it out to various private individuals and finally to French nuns. Further changes of ownership to Chevalier Spirlet-Neuville and to the industrialist Léon Duesberg followed. The industrialist Léon Duesberg restored the property. The castle was finally inhabited again by Count André d'Oultremont.

Story

During the first days of the 1914-18 war, the German troops wanted to pass between the forts of Fléron and Chaudfontaine to arrive as quickly as possible in Liège.

They reached Olne on August 5, 1914. Informed by observers placed in the tower of the church of Magnée, the Belgian forces of the forts of Fléron and Chaudfontaine fired shells on the German soldiers advancing from Soiron towards Olne and Saint Hadelin. Convinced that the Belgian forts had been informed by the inhabitants, the German troops killed 65 people, including 24 on the site of Vieux Sart.

Remark

The number of people killed in 14-18 mentioned on the Olnois monuments varies according to whether one counts the inhabitants of the commune being on the ground of the commune (or not), the inhabitants of Saint Hadelin being in Saint Hadelin at the time of the massacre (or not) or taking into account (or not) the people killed who did not live in Olne, but who were present on the spot.
