The channel is 17 km long, 2.5 meters deep and varies in width from 30 to 50 meters. The Wessem-Nederweert Canal was officially opened on October 22, 1929. It connects the Zuid-Willemsvaart and Noordervaart near Nederweert with the Maas near Wessem (Pol).
There is one lock in the canal: Panheel lock and nine bridges. They offer a vertical clearance of approximately 5 metres, sufficient for two layers of containers.
The maximum permitted dimensions of vessels on the canal are 96 meters in length, 9.5 meters in width and 2.10 meters in depth, corresponding to shipping class Cemt IV with a draft restriction of 2.10 metres. The canal's maintenance class is Sailing Class II.
