Old Plane Trees

Highlight • Natural Monument

As in many other parks in the area, there are also some old trees here, in this case plane trees.
Unlike in the well-kept parks, nature was able to appear quite undisturbed here and so these three old giants have a very natural growth form in a forest environment.

Pulverfabrik Blumau Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Blumau Powder Factory
In 1891, the Imperial and Royal Blumau Powder Factory, the first state-owned munitions factory in Austria, was built with 36 buildings.
The outbreak of the First World War led to a further expansion of the huge company, with over 30,000 employees in 1918. However, the end of the war was followed by collapse. Only the powder factory was continued "under the state's own management with around 100 workers"; the population of Blumau-Neurißhof fell to around 2,500 people.
On May 25, 1922, the worst explosion in the town's history occurred, caused by a fire in the powder factory. At least 19 people lost their lives and almost every building in the town was damaged.
In 1923, parts of the large plant that had been rebuilt after the explosion went to Sprengstoffwerke Blumau AG, in which Skodawerke Wetzler AG (Moosbierbaum) also owned shares and was responsible for the company's management, as well as the Republic. Skoda-Wetzler AG built a TNT factory (1928), a gunpowder factory (1930) and a nitroglycerin plant (1933) here on behalf of the Republic.

From the turn of the 1930s, there were repeated police interventions when representatives of the local Communist Party planned public meetings in which they wanted to take a stand against the entrepreneurial offensive of the state-owned explosives factory.

A brief upturn after 1938 was followed by the final liquidation of the company after the end of the war in 1945. In April 1945, the munitions factory was confiscated by the Soviet occupying forces and the entire inventory was dismantled and transported away. Since then, numerous house ruins and remaining foundations bear witness to the former size of the town.

Blumau was a center of the arms industry
