Street Art Carll Cneut "The Golden Cage"

Highlight • Monument

This is NOT the work of Bart Smeets but this acrylic painted work is by the multi-award winning Flemish illustrator CARLL CNEUT (@carll.cneut) and comes from the book 'De gouden kooi' that Cneut made together with Anna Castagnoli. In the book we meet the emperor's daughter Valentina who has a lot of stuff, but loves birds the most. Can you find Valentina among the birds?

Townhouse 'De Drij Dragonders'

Highlight • Monument

De Drij Dragonders is a corner house at Botermarkt 28, on the corner of the Zuivelmarkt, in Hasselt. The house is a combination of a number of shared houses. The half-timbered facade on the Zuivelmarkt was the front facade of one of these shared houses. It dates from around 1540. The upper part of this facade is cantilevered. In the 18th century, the shared houses were combined into one building and the facade on the side of the Botermarkt was built. This facade is diagonally relative to the ridge, because it follows the building line of the Botermarkt. Due to this renovation, the half-timbered facade has become an apparent side facade. In 1980, the house was protected as a monument.

The Borrelmanneke

Highlight • Monument

This bronze statue fountain by Lou Boonman from Neerpelt was placed by the city council on 19 September 1981 as a reminder of the rich jenever tradition.

The cycle of grain-jenever-cattle-land reclamation is depicted here; pigs and oxen were fattened with the draff (pulp of the distilled grain) and poor heathlands were made fertile with the manure of these stable animals, so that grain could be grown again for jenever production.

The Borrelmanneke symbolises the close bond between the city of Hasselt and the jenever industry.

An ox stands on a pedestal. A man sits astride the back of the cow. The ox forms a whole with the pigs that root around beneath him. The man has a jenever barrel on his right shoulder. Until the end of the previous century, jenever was supplied to shopkeepers and drinking houses in barrels and casks. Private individuals started to stock up 'at the barrel' with their jugs and stoppers. The most common tonnage was the wine stainless steel or 'ox head' (approximately 268 litres). Hence the nickname 'de Ossekoppen' that the Hasselt residents were given.

Hasselt expressions 'Zoe zat as è verke' and 'Zoe zat as nen os' also clearly refer to the connection between cattle breeding and jenever distillation. After all, the distillation waste (the draff) still contained traces of alcohol when it was served to the pigs or oxen.

Once a year in October during the jenever festival, real Hasselt jenever comes out of the fountain.

Saint Quintinus Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

The tower, which dominates the cityscape, houses the current carillon museum (carillon tower).

When the diocese of Hasselt was founded in 1967, this church, which has been protected as a monument since 1933, became the bishop's church or cathedral. It is also the only Belgian cathedral that never bore the title of collegiate or basilica, but was directly promoted from ordinary deanery parish church to cathedral.

A thorough restoration began in 1994 and was completed at the end of 2000. The restoration of the protected Binvigat-Niehof organ was completed two years later. The organ is unique because it still contains a large amount of original pipework from an earlier organ from 1793, which is also the oldest pipework in Belgium. Furthermore, the interior contains several important works of art such as the Renaissance choir stalls from 1549, the painting Calvary by Lampsonius, the Stations of the Cross and several murals by the Hasselt artist Godfried Guffens. The oldest known monstrance in the world is also owned by the cathedral, but it is exhibited in Het Stadsmus.

April 20, 2026,B: Hasselt, die 2.Runde mit Blauwe Boulevard ⚓️🤩
Back from NP Bosland, we still have plenty of time for another beautiful leisurely round through Hasselt.

We once again enjoy the beautiful old town and discover many sights. Since a reserved table awaits us at Maison Mathis, we gladly head to Quartier Bleu for dinner.
