Caters Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The De Caters family is an important family in the history of Sint-Job-in-'t-Goor. Pierre baron de Caters would be the first Belgian aviator to break records from his airfield in 's-Gravenwezel and Sint-Job-in-'t-Goor. But this family did not only play a role in the aviation world. In the history of Sint-Job-in-'t-Goor, the family also had other 'merits'.
Below are some examples/anecdotes:

After a quarrel with the pastor in 1863, Mathilde de Caters had a church built next to the parish church. Her church was finished in 1871. She was destroyed in 1914 and was not restored.
In 1868 Mathilde founded a Franciscan convent with a girls' school. In 1926 the monastery and school were taken over by the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus of Borsbeek and was given the name Sint-Raphaël and now belongs to the Brothers of Charity. Together with Kristus Koning, this now forms OC Clara Fey.
Baron de Caters, cousin and heir of Mathilde de Caters, founded an airfield in 1909. In 1910 there was a flying week. Pierre himself and, among others, Jan Olieslagers and his brother Max took part in this flight measurement. There was also a flying school where soldiers also received their training.
The tombstone of the family is still preserved behind the H. Man Jobkerk. The Caterskapel has been preserved and is located just on the Schilde territory.

Drieboomkensberg Pilgrimage Site

Highlight (Segment) • Religious Site

This place of pilgrimage is dedicated to Our Lady of Fever. The resort is located on the highest peak of a group of inland dunes. In 1746 the 'Convoy Battle' took place in Drieboomkensberg during the 'Succession War'. An English officer was seriously injured and he promised to erect a chapel if he survived the battle alive. His prayers were answered and around 1750 he had a chapel built here. However, this chapel was destroyed in 1800 by a terrible storm. The chapel was never rebuilt. A statue of Mary was hung from one of the three larchs on the hill. This statue can still be found in Drieboomkensberg. In the area you will find the beautiful Kempen forests and the ancient Zandven. The ideal environment to relax,

Grote Vraeghoeve

Highlight • Historical Site

The most striking and characteristic feature of this farm is the large thatched roof of the stable. Legend has it that in the stable of the original farm during the French Revolution there was an altar. Every Sunday, "silent masses" would have been secretly said for the patriots hiding in the woods.
There are still court canals around the Questionhoeve, which indicate that the original farm was a manor farm or small castle.
