Goed te Hulsvelde

Highlight • Historical Site

When I see a complex of detached buildings on a moated domain on the map, I think it is very likely that it is a farm with historical value.
And yes, that is also the case here. A fence largely blocks the view of this "Goed te Hulsvelde" for passers-by, a renovated farm whose core of buildings dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries... and whose history even goes back to the 16th century.
It is one of the largest and oldest farms in Meulebeke, once the core of the lordship of the same name, a sub-fief of Ter Borcht, and of the guild, one of the old residential areas in which the territory of Meulebeke was divided in the Middle Ages.
The name "Hulsvelde" means: "wasteland where holly grows"... because that was once the area around this farm. As uninhabited 'islands', these fields were used for grazing livestock of local residents for a long time and later productively forested, often with conifers. As early as the 12th century, a certain "Willelmus de Hulsvelde" was mentioned and in 1242 "Henricus de Hulsevelt". The oldest mention of "'t Goed te Hulsvelde" dates from 1551.
During the Second World War, the command post of the 30th Infantry Division, which was stationed in Meulebeke, was located here.

Hulsvelde Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Chapel of Our Lady, built in 1984 to replace a small chapel located a little further along the road. The chapel used to belong to the lordship of "Hulsvelde", the core of which is the historic farm "Goed te Hulsvelde" (see highlight of the same name)
The statue of Our Lady with Child in the chapel dates from 1956.
The chapel is against a holly hedge, which retains a reference to "Hulsvelde".
