Yser Tower (IJzertoren)

The first Yser Tower was inaugurated in 1930 as a memorial for the Flemish soldiers who lost their lives in the front region. During the Second World War the site became a backdrop for collaboration. The Yser Tower was detonated during an attack in 1946. A new tower was built from the ruins in 1965. The tower has housed a museum for several years now.

The renovated Museum aan de IJzer in the IJzertoren tells the story of the Belgian-German front during the First World War through the stories of soldiers, refugees and civilians on both sides of the front. The museum does not deliver a non-binding message, but a clear order: Never again war! In addition, the political consequences of this war, which culminate in the Flemish struggle for emancipation, are also explained. In addition to the view over the former Yser Front, you can also enjoy a beautiful panorama over Diksmuide and the Westhoek on top of the 84-meter-high tower.
